The Chair's account
The appointment was for nine. I arrived at a quarter to, set my coffee on its saucer and squared one blank sheet of paper to the edge of the table, ready for whatever we agreed on.
At nine-forty my visitor appeared at the far end of the table. He is a snail of some standing, and he had come the long way, which for him is any way. I did not mention the time. A good chair notes it in the minutes and moves on.
By noon he had covered half the distance to the paper. My coffee had gone cold, so I drank it cold, out of solidarity. We have not reached the first agenda item, but both parties remain committed to the process. I have cleared my afternoon, and Thursday as well. (We also play chess. That game is described under The Long Game and is not expected to finish this year.)
