The Chair's account
The game began in spring. My opponent is a snail with a fine brown shell, an old acquaintance from The Small Appointment. He sits at the edge of the board and considers every move from all angles, which for a snail takes a while.
I opened with the king's pawn, as my father did. He replied in June. By August we had both developed our knights, and I had started bringing a cushion for the chair.
I sit with my cheek on my hand and give each position the attention it deserves. People stop by the table to ask who is winning. The honest answer is that nobody has lost yet. I have a plan for the endgame, which I expect to use around the holidays if he doesn't see it coming. He sees everything coming, eventually.
A funny chess shirt for anyone who has thought about one move for a very long time, and a good gift for a patient friend. Give it to an impatient friend as a gentle hint.
