The Chair's account
I take my art seriously, which is why I visit the same painting every Saturday. It stands on a wooden easel in a gilt frame: one ripe banana on a gold ground, by an artist who has never been identified and, in my opinion, does not wish to be.
I stand with my hands clasped behind my back at the proper distance. The first ten minutes go to the composition and the next ten to the curve. After that I let the banana speak, and it has a great deal to say about ripeness and the passage of time.
A docent once asked whether I would like to see the rest of the collection. I told her I was still working through this piece. She has since brought me a folding stool, which I have not used, because one does not sit down in front of a masterpiece.
A funny art shirt for museum members and art students, and for anyone who has stood in front of a painting a little longer than necessary. It makes a good gift for the friend who always drags you to the museum.
