The Chair's account
I read every book the way it was meant to be read: in a wooden chair, from the first page, without skipping anything, including the page that lists the other books by the same author.
The stack under my chair is my current reading. I am on the top volume, chapter one, for the fourth time. It's a strong chapter, and I keep feeling I've missed something in the second paragraph, so I go back to the beginning to approach it fresh.
Friends recommend books to me with great enthusiasm. I thank them and add the title to the bottom of the stack, which they can see from where they stand, and which tells them roughly when to expect my thoughts. I have never written in a margin. My notes go on a separate card, filed inside the back cover.
