The Chair's account
The Committee has two members. I am the chair. The other member is a ham and tomato sandwich on white bread, roughly the height of a filing cabinet, who was already seated when I arrived for the first meeting and has not stood since.
We meet at my desk under the green lamp. I bring the agenda and a cup of coffee on its saucer, and the sandwich brings lettuce. I read every item aloud. When I call for objections the sandwich offers none, which a careless chair might mistake for agreement. I enter it in the minutes as "no comment."
There have been difficult sessions. Once a crumb fell onto the minutes, and I had to decide whether it counted as a formal submission. (I ruled that it did, and tabled it.) In all the time since, the sandwich has never interrupted me or replied all to anything, and I know of no finer colleague.
This is that first meeting, drawn in the faded inks of an old storybook. It is a funny office shirt for anyone who has sat across a table from someone who said nothing for an hour, and a good gift for the coworker who keeps the minutes nobody reads.
