The Chair's account
The coffee break is at 3:15 and lasts fifteen minutes. I have never taken it early, and I have never let anyone schedule a meeting across it.
My cup comes up to my chest. It was a gift, I believe, or a clerical error, and either way it holds exactly as much coffee as a fifteen-minute break requires. I stand beside it with one hand on the rim, the way you would stand beside a good horse.
There is one biscuit. It is about the size of a button, and I eat it in small bites spread over the whole break, so that it comes out even with the coffee. Some colleagues take two biscuits. I don't judge them, but I do make a note. At 3:30 I go back to my desk and answer my email (Per My Last Email covers that part of the day).
