The Chair's account
Management asked each of us to set a personal goal for the quarter. Mine is balance, and I have taken the assignment literally: a wooden plank laid across a round roller, and me standing on it in my good shoes.
The trick is to keep the knees soft and the arms out, and to let the tie go wherever it wants. It wants to go left. The board, for reasons of its own, prefers right, and I spend most of each session negotiating between them.
I have stayed level for as long as four seconds, which I recorded and reported upward. My supervisor wrote back to ask whether I could manage five by the end of the year. I said I would put it on the agenda. Then the board rolled, I stepped off, and the goal was carried over to next quarter with the others.
