The Chair's account
Some people take the highway. I take a red tricycle down Elm Street at a walking pace, knees up by the handlebars, both hands on the grips.
The office is four blocks away. I left at seven and expect to arrive around lunch, which leaves time to stop fully at both crosswalks and let a beetle finish crossing. Signal early, I always say, and tuck your tie into your jacket on the downhills. There are no downhills on Elm Street, but it is a good habit to keep.
Now and then a child pulls up beside me on a bicycle and asks if I need help. I thank them and explain that I am in no danger of falling over, which is more than they can say for themselves.
I sit up straight and let the cars go by. In all my years of riding I have never once been late, because nobody has ever expected me at any particular time.
