The Chair's account
Every great expedition begins with packing. Mine took three days. The pack is a rust-colored canvas affair with more pockets than I have possessions, and when it's full it stands taller than I do. It is always full.
I set out with a walking stick I carved myself, by which I mean I bought it already carved and sanded the handle a little. The route had been planned in advance. Base camp was the rock directly in front of me, a gray one about the size of a dinner roll.
I reached it before lunch and stood a long while looking up at the summit, which is the next rock along. Experienced climbers say the mountain will still be there tomorrow. I have found this to be true of every mountain I have attempted, and I have arranged my schedule around it.
