The Chair's account
The toaster was reported broken at 8:05. It had been asked to toast two slices of bread and had made no attempt.
I responded in person. I set it on a stool at eye level and crouched beside it to observe. The slices were in the slots and the lever was down, and the toaster made no sound. I asked it a few questions, which it declined to answer, and I began to suspect it was withholding something.
Then I followed the cord to its end and found the plug lying on the floor, connected to nothing. I have raised it to eye level, where I can study it. I haven't plugged it back in yet, because the investigation is still open, and because if I plug it in and it works I will never know what was really wrong.
A funny tech support shirt for IT and help desk staff, and for the one person in every family who gets the call about the printer.
