Training season has begun. My event is the hurdles, specifically one hurdle, ankle height, painted white with a black stripe across the bar.
I approach it at a walk. When I reach the bar I lift my right foot, set it carefully on top and bring it down on the other side, arms out for balance. Then I go back for the left foot. Coaches talk about clearing a hurdle in a single motion. I prefer two motions and a short rest.
My time this morning was forty seconds, a new record by about a second, though the timekeeper (me) admits the watch may have been started late. I have asked that the hurdle not be raised, and the committee in charge of the hurdle, which is also me, has agreed.
A funny running shirt for joggers, 5K walkers, people coming back from an injury and anyone who celebrates small wins. A good gift for a friend who has just started training.
