The Chair's account
The lawn falls under my authority, and I inspect it the way it deserves: one blade at a time, crouched with a clipboard and a wooden ruler.
Today's subject is a tuft at the edge of the walk. I set out a traffic cone first, since an inspector at work is a hazard to foot traffic, then held the ruler against the tallest blade. It measured within regulation height, though only just, and I have noted that it bears watching.
Neighbors sometimes offer to lend me a mower. I explain that mowing settles nothing, since once a lawn is mowed you never learn how tall it would have grown. My findings for the year are due in spring and will run to several volumes.
