The Chair's account
The subject was first sighted at 10:14 on a patch of open ground: one snail, brown shell, moving east.
I knelt at once and raised my binoculars. He was about four inches away, which at that magnification fills the whole view with shell. I find that a little distance helps a researcher stay objective, and four inches is as little as I can manage.
Over the next hour the subject moved east roughly the width of a playing card and paused twice to consider a leaf. He knows he is being observed and has chosen to carry on with dignity, which I respect. I recorded everything. My knees are not what they were, so the observation will continue until I can stand up.
A funny birdwatching and nature shirt for the friend who stops every fifty feet on a hike to look at something small. It also makes a good gift for a biology teacher.
