Thursday is arm day. I arrive at the gym in a three-piece suit, fold my towel over the end of the bench, sit down and select the smallest dumbbell on the rack.
A young man in a sleeveless shirt once asked why I don't take off the jacket. I told him a gentleman removes his jacket for a heat wave or a fire, and this was neither. He has not spoken to me since, which suits us both.
The curls are slow and deliberate. I raise the weight to my shoulder, hold it there long enough for it to understand who is in charge, and lower it again, counting each one aloud. Between sets I rest for as long as the set took, plus a little more for reflection, and straighten my cuffs. My tailor reports that the right sleeve has grown a quarter inch tighter since spring. I have asked him to note it in my file.
A funny workout shirt for the friend who never skips arm day, and for the friend who owns a gym membership mostly in spirit.
